We need more book clubs
I made directorywdc.com. I am hoping we can bring back discussion group culture into DC. This is a passion of mine, not a company or project.
My biggest gripe about city culture right now is the networking hustle that exists. If this existed and the secondary effect was bustling group culture, I would be happy. Sadly, it manifests itself in people joining a group for a singular meeting to connect then never showing up again.
I am located in DC, where this is most common. The culture here is... odd. We have, in my opinion, one of the most intellectually concentrated populations in the region/country yet the actual number of relationship based intellectual groups is dwindling.
Meetup and Eventbrite don't help at all. These are all bots or advertisers now. I wanted a place that listed groups that actually meet every month, read the same books or argue about the same ideas, and actually know each other's names.
The groups on directory are private and you must apply to join. I didn't want this to be about exclusivity, but I did want real groups with real people that actually meet. Hope to see you there!
If you run a book club, a discussion group, reading circle, or anything like it in DC - LIST IT!
I would love to do this, or see other people do this for their city. I love book clubs and discussion groups and the culture and relationships that can be built from them. It is what this country was founded on!
(yes claude designed the front end of website, but I think it looks kinda good?)
